The season is underway for the Swift Current AAA Midget Indians.

They earned a split of their first two games on the weekend versus the Saskatoon Giants.

Indians Assistant coach Currie Darby is optimistic about their squad this year.

"We have a fairly old squad," Darby said. "We have a bunch of second and third years with a couple of first years mixed in there. I think we have a really good base and a lot of guys have been together for the last six or seven years. We have a really good group of guys. They're all friends on and off the field and play really well together."

Darby sees the team's ability to hit in key situations as a major strength.

"Last year one of our weaknesses was probably our defence," Darby said. "If the first week is any indication it's a big step (forward) from last year. We didn't make any errors and made all the routine plays."

The Midget Indians take on the Regina Athletics tomorrow at Mitchell Field and host the Sasktoon Cubs on Sunday in a double-header.
