Action from Sunday's game between the Legionnaires and Beardy's Blackhawks

More drama for the Swift Current Midget AAA Legionnaires organization.

The results have been better on the ice so far this season, but trouble continues to follow the hockey club off the ice. Head Coach and Manager Jason Johns was suspended for 30 days due to a carding error and Assistant Coach Todd Hornung has stepped down from his post.

The carding error did not cost the team any of their six victories.

Johns is concerned about the number of negative anonymous comments online, some of which were supposedly written by Legionnaire parents.

"It's like a train wreck that you can't helping looking (at) or reading," Johns said. "All these opinions are out there and I think I've only had three parents that have approached me and we've sat down and talked."

"People (on the internet) not to have the integrity to show your name... but then can post anything they want about me, my family, my kids."

Swift Current Minor Hockey met with some parents on Saturday. In a statement to our newsroom, President Richard Bissonnette said they are still assessing the situation and won't comment further until it is resolved. When contacted, Hornung chose not to comment on his resignation.

Johns is hoping they can resolve the off-ice issues and get back to focusing on hockey.

"I can't control... everyone's opinion," Johns said. "Right now we're trying to show the boys that we just need to worry about hockey... and do the things that got us those six wins."

While suspended Johns is unable to be around the team an hour before, during and after their games. He is still able to run practice. Former Coach Jim Magee and Greg Hurrell ran the bench for the Legionnaires on the weekend. They lost 5-2 and 7-1 to the league leading Beardy's Blackhawks.

Swift Current was missing seven regulars from their line-up on Sunday afternoon due to suspensions, injuries and two players attending the U16 Western Canada Challenge Cup. They were still only out shot 39-33, but couldn't cash in on most of their chances.

"I'm very proud of the guys the way they competed," Johns said. "A couple of bounces the other way and the score could have been very different."

Affiliate player Hayden Johnston scored two of Swift Current's three weekend goals. He plays for the K-Motel Midget AA Hurricanes.

The Legionnaires visit the Saskatoon Contacts on Tuesday and host North Battleford next weekend.
