new riders stadium

The new design for the home of the Saskatchewan Roughriders was revealed in Regina Thursday morning with much fanfare along with a new 20 year naming rights deal with Mosaic Company.

The $278 million stadium will seat 33,000 and be expandable to 40,000 when needed. It's being called dome ready with a seasonal cover for the seats and would cost an extra $200 million to add a roof if its ever needed.

Regina Mayor Michael Fougere says this will be a key piece in revitalizing the downtown core. "It's a bold statement of our city and our province, a statement of a growing community and it is truly a landmark building that will be the most recognizable building in Canada."

For fans, the new stadium will be a lot more comfortable that the current one with actual seats instead of benches, shorter rows, making it easier to get to the aisles, a larger concourse, 200 food and beverage areas along with nine elevators and 38 restroom facilities with a total of 861 fixtures.

Groundwork is already underway with full on construction to start this fall. Completion is scheduled for the fall of 2016 with the first Rider game set for June 2017.
