Colts Football vs Central

Swift Current Comp High School Colts defensive back Zac Nickel is getting the Texas football experience this week.

He is participating in the Red Raiders International Bowl in San Antonio as part of the Under 16 South Saskatchewan Selects.

It's a learning experience for the grade eleven student.

"Gives me a bigger understanding of the game," Nickel said. "Coming down here and playing eleven man and all the American rules and stuff. Just working with new coaches and against better receivers is improving my skills overall."

It took some adjustment for him to play with the American rules.

"It's been a bit of a switch," Nickel said. "Just learning the new position. It's a lot more working in and out and having to watch the cover and guys moving from side to side. I'ts been a bit of an adjustment, but it's still football so it's not too hard to make the switch."

As for the Colts, he is optimistic they could have a good season next fall when Nickel is a senior.

"This year we had a fairly young team," he noted. "Coming into next year we should be more experienced. Moving forward we should be that much better. Guys should be bigger, faster and strong... guys will have a better understanding of playing the game which would be a big asset for us.

Nickel would like to keep getting better in his senior year and eventually play college ball.

The Selects are practicing this week and play games against other teams from across North America on the weekend.
