The Pee Wee 'AA' Indians after winning the provincial title

For the 2nd straight weekend, a Swift Current Minor Baseball team has claimed a Baseball Sask provincial title.

After the Mosquito 'AA' Indians won provincials on home soil last weekend, the Pee Wee 'AA' Indians capped off their undefeated run through the tournament with a 21-16 win over Melville in the provincial final yesterday in Weyburn.

Head Coach Derek Murdoch says winning the provincial title is a special feeling, especially being a coach.

"It's really exciting, the moment you get the last out and see the kids all pile up into one big mess of legs and arms, with gloves flying, it's pretty cool. It's just starting to set in this morning that we did what we set out to do 3 months ago, and we couldn't be happier with the effort from the kids." he said.

Yesterday's final was the 4th time in the tournament that the Indians scored 11 or more runs in a game.

Swift Current started off their weekend with a 23-0 win over White Butte.

They then beat Lloydminster 8-6, followed by a 25-1 win over Yorkton and an 11-1 win over Melville, which put them into the final.

The high scoring, lopsided victories are something Murdoch contributed to a team effort.

"For us to be successful, we knew we were going to be good defensively and pretty deep pitching wise but the thing for us was whether we were going to consistently get everybody on base. The entire weekend from top to bottom in our line-up everybody was on. Sometimes the bottom guys were getting things going for us and obviously our big guys at the top of the line-up were really good to." he said

The Pee Wee 'AA' Indians will now set their sights on St. Albert, Alberta, which is where they will be off to after winning the honour to represent Saskatchewan at Western's.

Western's will begin on August 14.
