NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs


The second round of the NHL playoffs opened Friday night with the Phoenix Coyotes winning game one of their Western Conference semi-final against the Nashville Predators.

Ray Whitney scored 14:04 into overtime to lift the Coyotes to a 4-3 win in their first second-round playoff game since moving to the desert in 1996.

Mike Smith made 39 saves for Phoenix, and was especially busy in the third period when the Predators outshot the Coyotes 16-1.

Game two of the series is Sunday.

Two more second round series open today with Washington visiting the New York Rangers in an Eastern Conference semi-final (1:00pm, CBC), and St. Louis hosting Los Angeles in the other West semi-final (5:30pm, TSN). New Jersey and Philadelphia open their series on Sunday.
