A strong offensive rushing performance combined with another defensive clinic from the Swift Current Comp Colts yesterday afternoon helped them upend the visiting Moose Jaw Vanier Vikings in SHSAA 5A South Rural Football League action.

Colts running back Jayden McBlain led the way with 19 carries for 98 yards and a touchdown with receiver Liam Rayner chipping in nine touches running for 116 yards in Swift Current's 27-7 victory at Colts Field. And for the second straight contest Colts linebacker Zac Cloutier scored a duo of small yardage touchdowns in the second half of the game.

"We're not blessed with a big bruising back, we can sneak Zac Cloutier in a little bit in those short-yardage goal-line situations," Colts Head Coach Derek Murdoch said. "Jayden and Liam are both guys who we had originally thought about as kind of a slotback or wide receiver kind of guys but they both did really good things with the football in the open field. You could see it yesterday they were both pretty slippery and shifty."

While it was the rushing game that secured the win for Swift Current in the second half of the game, it was an early first-quarter touchdown from rookie wide receiver Derric Dulatre who was able to scamper in from 6 yards out to open the scoring, one of his five catches on the day for 65 yards.

"Really excited to see some of the guys on offence come into their own a little bit," he said.

The Colts' defence set the tone for Swift Current for the second consecutive game not allowing a touchdown against, while only surrendering 133 yards with 35 of those yards via the Vikings run game on 34 attempts.

"Our front sevenish, depending on how we have things lined up, our big guys up front are pretty aggressive and they get upfield and find the football," he said. "Our linebackers were flowing to the football like crazy and lots of rushes for losses... The defence keeps getting us the football and we eventually get things figured out with the offence."

The Vikings lone touchdown scored in the defeat was by Peter Gumacal who scooped up a fumble by Colts quarterback Elijah Siemens after he was sacked, with Gumacal running the ball 75 yards for the score early in the third quarter. Nathan Shiferaw made the kick for Moose Jaw to knot the game at 7-7.

Cloutier would respond for Swift Current just two and half minutes later scoring from three yards out and then he'd add another early in the fourth quarter stretching the Colts' lead to 20-7. McBlain would pick up his first touchdown on the year with just over 2 minutes left in the game making it 26-7 before Colts kicker Logan Kachmarski would make his third extra-point kick of the day rounding out the scoring.

Swift Current moved to 2-0 on the season with the win and head to Moose Jaw next Saturday afternoon to take on the Central Cyclones.
