Aneroid's Patrick Marleau and the San Jose Sharks scored a big overtime win Friday night

 

Second-round NHL Playoff action continued Friday night with two games.

 

Benn Ferriero scored on a shot that deflected off a Detroit player at 7:03 of overtime as the San Jose Sharks grabbed a 1-0 lead in their Western Conference semifinal with a 2-1 win over the Red Wings.  Joe Pavelski tied it for San Jose with his fourth of the playoffs midway through the third.

Steven Stamkos' third goal of the playoffs was the difference as the Tampa Bay Lightning surprised the Washington Capitals 4-2 in Game 1 of their series.  Dwayne Roloson made 26 saves for Tampa Bay,
which will look to grab a 2-0 lead in the second-round matchup Sunday.

 

The Vancouver Canucks will look to grab a 2-0 lead in their series with Nashville tonight.  The Canucks took Game 1 by a 1-0 score.  Elsewhere, the Bruins and Flyers will open their series with an afternoon affair in Philadelphia.

 

The Spokane Chiefs hammered Portland 8-3 in game four of the WHL Western Conference Final last night, to tie up the series at two games apiece. Game five is tonight in Portland.The winner of the series takes on the Kootenay Ice in the Ed Chynoweth Cup Final

 

Canada opened action at the World Hockey Championships in Slovakia Friday with a 4-1 win over Belarus. John Tavares had a goal and an assist for the Canadians. Their next action is tomorrow morning when they take on France.

 

The best Junior A hockey teams in Canada battle for the RBC Royal Bank Cup this week in Camrose Alberta. Herbert's Blake Voth plays goal for the BCHL's Vernon Vipers, who are at the tournament looking for their third-straight title. The other teams are the Portage Terriers, the Wellington Dukes, the Pembroke Lumber Kings, and the host Camrose Kodiaks, who kick off action against the Vipers tonight.
