Max Martin scored with 6.7 seconds left in regulation lifting the Prince Albert Raiders to a 3-2 comeback win over the Swift Current Broncos.

The Raiders struck three times on the power play including twice in the third period to earn their first win in seven tries against the Broncos this season. Swift Current has only won once in their last seven games.

“Disappointed to lose,” said Broncos associate coach Ryan Smith. “We've had a week off between games and done a lot of work to get ready for today. We're in a bit of slump here now and today would have been a day to bust out of it. You had a team that played twice already this weekend and travelled for an afternoon game. All that lined up very well for us and we didn't take advantage of that. Hats off to them they played well.”

The Broncos had been focused lately on playing better defensively. They felt they had done that for most of the game with Prince Albert and that helped them to a 2-1 lead after the second period.

“We gave up the goal in the first period on the penalty kill and then limited their opportunities the rest of the first and most of the second,” Smith said. “We felt good about ourselves. 2-1 lead at home you want to finish it off well and close it off right. You give up a couple of late goals and it's just really disappointing.”

The Raiders went 3 for 7 on the man advantage as the Broncos have now given up three power play goals in each of their last three games. They've dropped 71% on the season and last in the WHL.

“We couldn't get pucks out,” Smith said. “We gave them second chances when you had a clear opportunity to get it out. Secondly I think that our guys are a little bit nervous on the penalty kill now because we've been scored on so often. We're hesitating moving to spots. The third one we don't get the puck out, we don't box out and we don't block a shot. It's our biggest problem right now as a team. We're giving up three every night... it's gotta change.”

Kaden Elder and Arthur Miller scored the goals for Swift Current. Elder finished a beautiful passing play from Glenn Gawdin and Alexsi Heponiemi. Miller's goal came after goaltender Nicolas Sanders got some but not all of a Lane Pederson shot and Miller tapped it in.

The Raiders got goals from Cavin Leth and Curtis Miske. It was likely the last WHL game for Leth, a former Bronco, and Swift Current product Tim Vanstone in the Credit Union iPlex.

Sanders made 27 saves to earn the win for the Raiders who have won five of their last six games. Papirny stopped 29 of the 32 shots he faced for the Broncos.

Swift Current has now dropped to 25-17-3-5 and only five points up on Brandon for third place in the WHL East Division.

The Broncos were without defenceman Arytom Minulin who plays in the CHL Top Prospects Game on Monday. Ryan Graham was out injured, while 15-year-old Logan Barlage played his second WHL game for Swift Current.

Swift Current hosts Edmonton on Wednesday before welcoming the Wheat Kings on Saturday.
