The Riders started off their Grey Cup title defence with a big 34-13 win at home over the Edmonton Eskimos.

Running Back Wes Cates was one of the big offensive factors of the game, with two touchdowns and three receptions, including an amazing over-the-shoulder catch in the fourth quarter. He says he always had confidence in his receiving abilities and proved it during the game.

The Riders also proved they would do just fine without last year's number one quarterback and most outstanding player award winner Kerry Joseph. Quarterback Marcus Crandell threw for 273 yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He admitted he put a lot of pressure on himself before the game, and is happy to get that first win out of the way.

The Riders head to BC for week two action against the Lions on Friday.
