The Saskatchewan Roughriders watched their playoff hopes slip away as they were completely dominated by the Calgary Stampeders 40-3 on Saturday afternoon at McMahon Stadium.

Saskatchewan came into the game looking to bounce back from the beating they were handed by the BC Lions last weekend at Mosaic Stadium, but instead suffered their second straight 37 point loss to a West Division opponent.

Saskatchewan now sits at 4-9 on the year and well out of a playoff spot, trailing BC in the West and Hamilton in the East crossover by six points each.

The Riders kept it close early on, trailing only 10-3 at one point during the first half, but they couldn’t slow down Jon Cornish and the Calgary rushing attack on this day.

Cornish finished with 149 yards on 13 carries and two touchdowns.

Quarterback Darian Durant went 12-for-21 with 128 yards passing and two lost fumbles before giving way to backup Ryan Dinwiddie, who wasn’t much more effective throwing for only 32 yards on eight attempts.

Durant’s two fumbles were costly as the Stamps turned both into points, including a 71-yard fumble return in the second quarter by Charleston Hughes.

Chris Getzlaf was the top receiver for the Riders with three catches for 58 yards.

This loss marks the second straight week that the Riders offence has failed to find the end zone with them scoring just eight points in the last eight quarters.

The Riders will have some time to think about the loss as they don’t play for nine days now when they head to Edmonton.

GAME NOTES: Jerrell Freeman was taken to hospital after suffering a deep cut.  Lance Frazier left the game due to the hamstring injury that kept him out last week.

In 9-man High School Football, Shaunavon lost to Assiniboia 45-20, with Eric Sutter scoring two touchdowns for the Shadows.
