Allen Cup

The Rosetown Redwings began their quest for the Allan Cup in Lloydminster with a tight loss today.

They fell 2-1 to the South East Prairie Thunder.

The senior hockey squad is attempting to be the 4th team in Saskatchewan history to win the Championship that dates back to 1909.

The Redwings have no shortage of southwest connections. They boast Dusty, J.J. and Luke Hunter from Shaunavon, Evan Schwabe who plays in the Notekeu for Assiniboia, Russ Monette from Neville, as well as former Broncos Brent Twordik and Jeff Harvey.

Mankota Product, former Prince Albert Raider, University of Saskatchewan Husky and current Shaunavon Badger Evan Schafer says many of the players know one another: "I know a lot of guys I played with in University with the Huskies... are now playing with Rosetown. A lot of guys know each other they've played either with them or against them throughout their careers."

Schafer says the level of play is quite high: "Everyone is basically an ex-pro hockey player... everyone still has that competitive edge to them. It's actually a great pace of hockey. Probably some of the better hockey I've played in my day."

J.J. Hunter scored the lone goal for Rosetown in their 2-1 loss. They fired 39 shots on goal compared to only 30 for South East. They will play Grand Falls-Windsow on Wednesday.

The Allan Cup championship game will be played next Saturday.
