All Elmwood Golf and Country Club head professional Brennan Rumancik seems to do is win.

Rumancik made it two straight seasons clinching the PGA of Sask Tour Championship. After claiming the title in 2018 at Dakota Dunes Golf Links, Rumancik did it again yesterday in less-than-desirable elements at the course south of Saskatoon.

"It feels good - to be able to go back-to-back in such a great event at the end of the season with such great players, it feels good to be able to take that one down," Rumancik said.

"It's tough, because it's not a traditional stroke play event. You have to adapt - if one thing's not working, you just try to grind around that round just to get that win."

Rumancik opened Day 2 of the match play event in the semi-finals, after securing a pair of victories on Monday.

In the semis, Rumancik was 3 down through six holes against Kevin Dietz. Both players went back and forth, with Rumancik taking the victory on the 18th green.

With the rain pouring down and the temperature low enough to almost be counted on one hand, an even more dramatic match was in store in the final.

Rumancik came into the event as the second seed. His opponent in the final was top-seeded Ryan Wells of Prince Albert.

Elmwood's head pro needed two playoff holes to claim the 2019 Tour Championship.

He recounts the grueling match, which undoubtedly had its ups and downs.

Over his four matches, Rumancik said that it really wasn't that glamorous of a two-day event for himself, but consistency in ball-striking aided in maneuvering the links-style course.

"I didn't have one thing that was really bad, and I didn't have one thing that was exceptionally great," he said. "In the conditions we had to play in, ball-striking becomes even that more important. One miss-hit is kind of magnified when it's windy, raining, cold. It just makes it that much worse."

"Ball-striking was great, and especially on a course like that. You can't miss it in some areas. With some undulating greens that they have there, you could have a 20-foot chip, and you could have no chance to get it up and down, just because of the green layout."

The final event of the summer season was the third win for Rumancik. He won the Oakcreek Zone Championship up in Nipawin, then won the professional flight of the Pro Junior event at his home course in Swift Current.

That also spells back-to-back seasons clinching three event wins. In 2018, Rumancik won the Taylormade ProAm, and Pro Pro Best Ball to go along with the Tour Championship.

"I feel fortunate to be able to win three times in one year in back-to-back seasons. It's no easy task against the great players we have in Saskatchewan here. There's a lot of great players that can easily win any event," he said.

"I feel like I had a little better year this year winning the PGA (Zone Championship), the Tour Championship, and the Pro Junior, which is one of my favourite events here at Elmwood. I had a great year last year too, winning second a couple of times. I would say they're pretty comparable, but I was definitely happy with the year this year, and how everything went for sure."

After the first three-win season last year, Rumancik was named the 2018 PGA of Sask 'Player of the Year'. With another Tour Championship and three-win season under his belt, Rumancik makes a strong case to repeat as the 'Player of the Year', though it's out of his hands now.

"The players in our association vote on who they think had the best year," he explained. "Ryan Wells has had an amazing year this year too - he's had a couple seconds, he's won a couple events, and then him and I went down the stretch there in the match play, and went 20 holes. It kind of came down to that."

"I'd be happy for Ryan if he won, and obviously I'd be happy if I won too. Both of us are definitely deserving of it."

The two clear favourites in the race for a POY nod, Rumancik and Wells will have to wait until late October to learn their fate regarding the prestigious honour.

The PGA of Sask Awards Show runs October 29-30, in conjunction with their Merchandise Show at Prairieland Park in Saskatoon.
