Cody Coverchuk hangs on to Pop Evil in his championship ride at Saturday's PBR Event

For the first time ever, a Saskatchewan cowboy has won the Redhead Equipment Cody Snyder Invitational PBR event in Swift Current.

Meadow Lake's Cody Coverchuk scored a total of 169.5 points to take the event on Saturday, clinching it with an 87 on "Pop Evil" in the final round.

"That's a good little bull," Coverchuk said. "I've seen him lots and actually watched him growing up and coming into bull riding, and said 'If I ever draw that bull, I'm going to make sure I ride him tonight,' and it worked out. Tonight's the first night I got on him."

Coverchuk had the huge crowd at the Credit Union iplex behind him for his last ride, as they gave him a standing ovation as he got on the bull and held on for the eight-second ride.

"Being hometown Saskatchewan, and everyone's behind you like that, you better not mess up or else everyone will just be disappointed," he said, adding that this win will help him a lot this season.

"I've been to the Built Ford Tough tour once last year, I got a taste of it and never got to stay down there, and it just gets the fire burning under me," Coverchuk added. "I'm really ready to go now, I'm going to hit every bull that I can from here until they're done next year."

Strathmore's Scott Schiffner, who also rode "Pop Evil" to win the first Swift Current PBR event in 2011, finished second with a 163.5, and Ty Pozzobon of Merritt, BC was third with an 86 total score.
