Swift Current Broncos defenceman Dom Schmiemann is turning heads during late season stint with the WHL club.

The Broncos called Schmiemann up from the Midget AAA Notre Dame Hounds after Mark Taraschuk left the team for personal reasons and Max Lajoie was sidelined with an illness.

Swift Current's 2014 first round bantam draft pick has a goal, an assist and is +1 in 7 games with the Broncos so far.

"I feel like as the games go on I'm becoming more confident out there," Schmiemann said. "I'm just keeping my game simple and building my confidence as each game goes on."

With a couple of veterans out of the lineup and the team in the midst of a playoff race he knows they have to stick to basics.

"Just keeping it simple and making the simple plays," Schmiemann said. "Not doing anything fancy and just getting the job done."

"He's come up and played fantastic," said Broncos assistant coach Jamie Heward. "He just made simple plays. He made hard passes when he had to, if he ran into a problem and didn't have a play he'd get it out to the neutral zone. Simple with young defencemen is always the best."

"He's handled himself very well."

It's been a good season for Schmiemann in Midget AAA. He had 25 points in 37 games for the Hounds while playing in every situation.

"I've watched him several times in Notre Dame," Heward said. "He's been fine. He played big minutes and he played on the power play. He's done very well."

Schmiemann didn't take long to get his first point with an assist on his first shift. He also added his first goal on a dump-in against Kootenay that took a wicked bounce off the stanchion and changed direction into the Ice net.

"It's not how I imaged it at all," he noted. "But it's good to get the first one. I'm happy it happened."

Schmiemann and the Broncos are headed up to Prince Albert tonight. They're still eight points back of Edmonton for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot with thirteen games left to play.

The season series with the Raiders has been a tight battle with Swift Current winning three out of the five games.

"We have been playing them good this year," said Broncos associate coach Ryan Smith. "They've been entertaining games and they've been tight games."

With time running out on the season the Broncos likely need to put together a significant run of success to have a chance to catch Edmonton. They're still trying to take it game by game.

"We can't say we need to win this many out of this many," Smith said. "We've got to keep everything in perspective. That one game and that's PA coming up. We've got to play that one for all it's worth."

You can hear the game live on The Eagle 94.1 FM at 6:30pm. The Broncos are back home at the Credit Union iPlex to host Medicine Hat on Friday and Calgary on Saturday.
