For the second straight contest to begin the 2016/2017 regular season, the second period was the difference, handing the Home Hardware Midget 'AAA' Legionnaires another loss to begin the season

"Right now, as a team, we need to learn how to win," said Legionnaires Head Coach Darren Evjen following the team's 6-2 loss at the hands of the Notre Dame Hounds.

"Part of that is needing to stay to a game plan, you need to show discipline. There are lots of things in our game that we need to learn how to play to achieve success, that we don't have right now. The good thing is it is early and we just need to come to work every day and get better."

The start to the home opener looked promising for the young Legionnaires team, who's average age is 15.75 years.

Swift Current scored a pair of power play goals in the opening frame, the first from Tyler Pryhitka, followed by Ethen Regnier to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

That, however, is where everything turned around.

The Hounds came out with a purpose in the second and took most of the play to the Legionnaires.

Notre Dame fired home four goals in the middle frame, three of those coming on the power play, as the Hounds took advantage of every penalty Swift Current took during the period.

"We lost because we didn't have composure, we didn't have details in our game and we didn't dig in when we needed to dig in," said Evjen.

"We took the easy way and took penalties rather than play a hard north-south game."

In the third period, the Legionnaires penalty problems continued.

Swift Current took another five penalties in the final period, with one of them leading to another Hounds power play goal as the Notre Dame power play wound up going 4-8 on the night.

"We've got good players. Right now, we just need to learn how to play a little more detailed game with a little more character, patience and those kinds of things," Evjen said.

In the final two periods of Wednesday night's contest, the Hounds outshot the Legionnaires 34-8.

Swift Current (0-2) will now try for their first win of the season on Saturday.

They will travel to North Battleford for a pair of games over the weekend against the Stars.
