Just over half a year since Shaunavon-born icon Hayley Wickenheiser was inducted into the Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame, the next Hall has come knocking.

Wickenheiser was announced as part of the 2019 IIHF Hall of Fame class.

Wickenheiser is one of Canada's big hockey names, and one of the most decorated female athletes of all time.

Her 22-year international career saw several notable accomplishments:

  • 13 total medals (7 gold, 6 silver)
  • 5 Winter Olympics appearances (Most All-Time)
  • 2 Winter Olympics Tournament MVPs
  • Winter Olympics all-time leading scorer (51 points in 26 games)
  • Women's Worlds all-time leading scorer (86 points in 61 games)

Her international career was kicked off at just 15 years old, when she debuted with Team Canada at the 1994 Women's Worlds. Wickenheiser's final event came in the 2016 Women's Worlds.

Away from the stats, and on more of an intangible area, Wickenheiser's balance of tenacity and character, both on and off the ice, have been praised worldwide, making it a matter of time before the IIHF Hall of Fame came calling.

Wickenheiser was the lone Canadian athlete announced in the IIHF's 2019 Hall of Fame class.
