Two shootout wins this weekend propelled the Home Hardware Midget AAA Legionnaires to the second highest win total in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League.

The Legionnaires were on the road in Saskatoon Friday night against the Blazers, and used three power-play goals from Lucas Ochitwa, Jerzy Orchard, and Hunter Lamb to force a 3-3 tie, and ultimately shootout number one.

A winner was yet to be crowned through the first 13 shooters, but the 14th time was the charm - defenseman Christian Riemer put the puck past Blazers netminder Matthew Pesenti, handing Swift their seventh win of the season in the 4-3 finish.

The win came after an eight-day stretch without play, which is why it may not have been the prettiest effort from the team, according to their head coach.

"We worked hard and we played well, we just looked a little out of sync in a sense that game sharpness wasn't there for everybody," said Legionnaires coach Darren Evjen. "It had nothing to do with work ethic, it was just a matter of getting a feel back into the game, and doing the right things - things that come naturally when you're playing lots."

Steven Duchscher stopped 16 of 19 shots to record the win in game one.

Fast forward to Sunday afternoon against the powerhouse Prince Albert Mintos, and the Legionnaires were making their first appearance back at the Innovation Credit Union iPlex after hosting their first four home games at Fairview West arena. Evidently, that was not the only first the late-October contest provided.

The Legionnaires got out to the early lead in the game as just 2:29 in, Owen Ozar and Ty Muench set up Kersey Reich on the man-advantage for his second goal of the season.

The Mintos would answer the early Swift charge with one of their own, courtesy two goals from forward Kishaun Gervais to give Prince Albert the 2-1 lead at the first intermission.

Only one goal would come in the second frame, yet another power play goal from the Legionnaires, this time it was Muench who scored with assists from Ozar and Lamb.

The game really started to get interesting - as if it wasn't entertaining enough for fans in attendance - after a Mintos goal just over five minutes into the third gave Prince Albert a 3-2 lead.

With the clock winding down near the four-minute mark, Legionnaires rookie forward Reed Jacobson scored his first career SMAAAHL goal in his eighth game.

"It felt great to get that monkey off my back," said the Swift Current product. "Finally put one in the net - I mean it took a while, but it feels really good."

Jacobson was set up by a pair of familiar faces to the stat sheet as Muench and Lamb once again set up a goal.

The momentum appeared to shift heavily in Swift Current's favour after they tied the game up with just 4:08 to go in the game, but Prince Albert managed to silence the arena with a goal just 24 seconds after that to take the 4-3 lead.

With under one minute remaining, the Legionnaires net empty, and a Mintos player in the penalty box, Swift Current used the 6-on-4 advantage to yet again tie the game up.

Ozar (pictured left) worked his magic again, as the team captain scored with just 26 seconds left to tie the game at 4-4, and send it to overtime, and ultimately the shootout.

The second shootout of the Legionnaires' weekend ended up a lot shorter.

After a Mintos miss, Ozar blasted shot past goalie Cale Elder to give Swift the edge. The Mintos would go on to miss again, and with the next Swift skater having a chance to seal the win, Legionnaires head coach Darren Evjen leaned on the rookie Jacobson - the rookie sniped one past Elder to send the Mintos home with the 5-4 shootout loss.

It was a huge night for Jacobson, who logged significant time in key situations for Swift Current - on the power play, the last-minute 6-on-4, and the shootout.

"The thing about Reed is you can trust him in any situation. That's going to be his strength as he moves up in his hockey career," said Evjen. "As you coach him, you trust him more and more every day, and that's a big thing - it's not one area, it's every area."

"Depth is huge in this league, especially when all four lines have to be going every single night. When young guys like Reeder step up like that, it's so big," Ozar added, as the Prince Albert native finally topped his hometown team. "You know, we've lost before but we're starting to know how to win and it feels good coming back like that. In my three years here I've never beat them, so that felt extra great."

The Legionnaires (8-3) next game wraps up the month of October with a Halloween match-up at the Innovation Credit Union iPlex against the Regina Pat Canadians (6-2-1-1).
