The heart attack kids were at it again as Colby Sissons scored 1:46 into overtime to lift the Swift Current Broncos to a 2-1 overtime win over the Regina Pats on Monday night.

The victory put the Broncos up two games to one on the Pats in their second round WHL playoff series.

“It's pretty awesome,” Sissons said. “I just fired it on net and luckily it went in.”

The Broncos haven't been able to breathe easy all playoff as it took seven hotly contested games to beat Moose Jaw in the first round. They've now had to go to overtime twice to get an edge against the Pats.

“It was a pretty exciting game,” said Broncos associate coach Ryan Smith. “Not a lot between the teams. Chances on both sides. Pretty hard play, pretty fast paced and fortunate enough to get the goal in overtime.”

Sissons rushed the puck from his own end, cut up the middle and fired a puck through the five-hole of Pats netminder Tyler Brown early in overtime to send the sold out Credit Union iPlex into a frenzy.

“Colby makes a read jumps the play and makes a good shot,” Smith said. “We've talked about throwing the pucks towards the net. He had a rush, he had some guys on the sides and he just took a shot and squeezed it through the five hole. You get a chance to put the puck to the back of the net and you do it.”

The jam packed crowd came unglued as Sissons beat Brown to put the Broncos back on top of the series with the WHL's top regular season team.

“Just like in game one we stuck with it all game,” Sissons said. “Another greasy game I guess you could say. In the end it trickled through just like an overtime goal.”

It was tight throughout the night as the teams were tied for all but 2:07 of the game.

Regina opened the scoring 3:03 into the second period when Dawson Leedahl won a battle in front of the Swift Current net to knock the puck behind Broncos netminder Jordan Papirny.

Conner Chaulk responded at 5:10 of the period when he converted a Broncos power play while being hooked up by Pats defenceman Josh Mahura.

“We've done it all year,” Sissons said. “We've been behind and we always find a way to come back. We have a never quite attitude. The first series was the same way... we played tight games all series and that is going to help us this round.”

Swift Current received a scare midway through the third period as Connor Hobbs hit Sahvan Khaira with a big open-ice hit and sent him to the Broncos' dressing room for a part of the third period. The 18-year-old defeneman who has been turning heads during the playoffs was able to return for the third period.

Regina was without captain Adam Brooks and top-six forward Filip Ahl with no update on when they could return. Broncos forward MacKenzie Wight received a two-game suspension for the hit that injured Brooks.

Swift Current had defenceman Dom Schmiemann back in the lineup in place of Wight.

After taking ten minor penalties in game two, the Broncos held Regina to 0 for 2 on the power play in game three.

“Like anybody you make adjustments after each game,” Smith said. “We made a couple of adjustments. They have a potent power play and they hit a post. I think the key is not taking penalties like we did the other night and limiting their opportunities on the power play.”

Papirny was very strong again for Swift Current stopping 33 pucks. He was named first star for the fifth time in six playoff wins this season. Papirny is also the WHL's Goaltender of the Week.

Despite having a 2-1 series lead, the Broncos aren't getting ahead of themselves. They know their hardest work and biggest tests are in front of them.

“The series is far from over,” Smith said. “Three games in and two of them overtime of course it's a close series. We adjust, we prepare and we get ready for tomorrow. That's the playoffs you don't get a lot of time to enjoy your wins you move on to the next game. We expect a push from them they will want to get a win heading back to Regina. We'd like to try and keep home ice advantage going here and get the second home win tomorrow night.”

Swift Current can enjoy the moment briefly before re-focusing on game four on Tuesday night in front of another sold out Credit Union iPlex crowd.

“You've got to live in in the moment for a bit but not too long,” Sissons said. “Tomorrow is a new day and a new game. We poked the bear in game one and poked them again tonight so we're going to have to bounce back again tomorrow.”
