Former Swift Current Broncos star Zack Smith is staying in our nation's capital.

Smith has inked a four-year contract extension with the NHL's Ottawa Senators for $3.25 million per season.

The Maple Creek native is on pace for another impressive offensive season with 11 goals and 11 assists in 43 games.

He set a career high in both goals (25) and points (36) in 2015-16 while playing a noted two-way game.

Smith's previous four-year contract with the Senators was set to expire after this season. He is getting a nice raise from a previous average salary of $1.887,500 per year.

Swift Current Online talked to Smith before the season and he noted it was going to be a unique situation.

"It's a huge year," Smith said in September. "It would be my first year going into it without a contract for next year."

New Senators coach Guy Boucher had indicated to Smith before the season he wanted him in a shut down role and didn't expect the same type of scoring from him.

"He said they don't expect you to put up those numbers playing in that role so that was a little pressure off," Smith added. "At the same time I think I'm capable of filling in a top six role when a chance arises."

As fate would have it the Senators lost forward Clark MacArthur to a concussion and had battled injuries that saw Smith again move up the lineup and deliver offence. Now he will make Ottawa his home for some time to come.

Smith scored 110 points in 221 career WHL games with the Broncos including 70 points in 72 games as the captain in his final season.
