A couple of local rinks join a field of 16 competing for a shot at the provincial curling championships in Swift Current this week.

Our curling club is hosting the Men's Southern Sasktel Tankard.

Five southern based rinks will quality for provincials based on their performance this week.

Swift Current Curling Club GM Dean Toles expects a wide open field.

“Really it's anybody's game. We've got a lot of guys who've come through the provincial cash tour that have had really strong showings. There will be a lot of names that will be familiar to anybody who came out and watched the curling cash tour. It could be anybody. There's a lot of strong young teams and a couple older, experienced ones...it'll be a really good contest for curling.”

Toles says the local guys have a good shot at it.

“We've actually got two local teams, we've got Kirkpatrick, we've got their rink in here, and the Quentin Rink is also in so it'll be nice to see some local content out there and they're good teams, they'll have a good chance to come out of here and go on to the the provincial Tankard.”

The Max Kirkpatrick rink opens the event in the first draw against Moose Jaw's Steven Slupski at 1pm today.

"The field is even stronger than I thought," Kirkpatrick said. "I've played these guys for years and I know they're solid players. We'll just have to play good. Being on home ice is an advantage."

Rod Quintin's rink faces Regina's Chris Busby in the second draw at 7pm.
