Action gets underway between the Regina Pats and Medicine Hat Tigers at the Crescent Point Wickenheiser Centre Friday.

Dyson Stevenson lifted his Regina Pats to a big win in front of his hometown crowd last night.

The Shaunavon-native scored the shootout winner as the Pats beat the Medicine Hat Tigers 6-5 in a wild WHL exhibition game at the Crescent Point Wickenheiser Centre.

The Pats exploded to a 5-2 lead after the first period, but after a scoreless second, the Tigers answered back with three goals, including the tying marker from former Swift Current Bronco Ryan Aasman with just over a minute left in regulation. Stevenson scored first in the shootout for the Pats, and Landon Peel followed up with another goal to seal the win, as the Tigers missed both of their shots.

Close to a thousand fans took in the first-ever hockey game at the new facility, which officially opened over the summer.

Stevenson says it's good to come home to a big crowd that supports him, and to get the shootout goal was amazing for him. He adds the rink is an amazing facility and playing hockey on it was great, but if it wasn't for the fans, it wouldn't have been as good of a game.

Tiger forward, and fellow Shaunavon-native Kale Kessy, was not dressed for the game as he was attending Phoenix Coyotes camp, after being drafted by the team this summer.

Stevenson and the Pats host the Swift Current Broncos tonight, while the Broncos play the Raiders in another game at the Wickenheiser Centre next Saturday.
