It's been a successful first venture in the Saskatchewan Premier Soccer League for the the Swift Current Under 14 Girls.

They're the only local team in the SPSL and earned a playoff spot with a 4-0 win over Saskatoon's Eastside Force on Saturday.

"We had probably our most complete effort of the season," said Assistant Coach Steve Mah. "Played good right throughout the whole 80 minutes.

Mah didn't know what to expect when they entered a league against all the best club teams in the province.

Steve Mah Interview"Probably at the start of the season (playoffs) would have been an ambitious goal if you would have asked us at that time," Mah said. "It's an accomplishment we're pretty proud of.

The season hasn't necessarily gone how they would have guessed.

"It's funny because the season kind of went in reverse," Mah added. "We thought we'd have a slow start and try to catch up to teams. We actually had a fast start and some teams actually caught up to us a little bit, but we've had a pretty strong finish the last couple of games."

The U14 United sit second in the league and still have a shot at first place depending how things fall before their final regular season game in three weeks. Mah is impressed with the way the team has progressed.

"Some of them were pretty nervous at the start of the year," he said. "They've really stepped up. There's a lot of girls that have played higher than our expectations. They've really come toegther as a team. They stick together. Out of all the teams in the league I think we might be the tightest knit."

The United Girls will now have a three-week break due to players throughout the league leaving their squads to play for Team Saskatchewan over that time.
