SunDogs Volleyball 2013

The Great Plains College SunDogs hit the court for their first volleyball games of the season Thursday night.

They will start their season on their home court against their rivals from Millar

Men's Coach Travis Cuthbert knows it's a measuring stick.

Travis Cuthbert Interview"They are if not one of the best teams they're very much in the pack for the provincial championship," he said. "To see them first game we'll pretty much be able to gauge where we are in the league."

That's a sentiment shared on the women's side as well.

"Millar is always one of those teams that does well each season," said womens' SunDogs Coach Morgan Montgomery. "That's going to be a difficult thing for us to go up against, but Millar is one of those teams that if you can fare well agains them you're usually going to do alright."

It's a smaller roster for the women's SunDogs this season with nine players and only one returning veteran.

Morgan Montgomery Interview"With the smaller number of girls I have a lot of girls that aren't really speciality players," Montgomery said. "They don't play just one position. Most of the girls on the team are used to playing two or three positions so I think we'll do just fine because they're all ready to go out no matter where they play."

While not a physically imposing team, they strength should be their team play and their defensive game.

"I think we're going to have a pretty strong defensive team," she noted. "It seems like in Swift Current we don't really have a lot of height on our female teams and that's going for us again this year we don't have a lot of tall girls... which sometimes plays in when you're playing offensively and the hitting. We have a lot of great passing and I'm hoping that's where we're going to excel."

The men's team is coming off a successful year and hoping to build on that even though they've only got one returning player on their roster as well.

"We're fortunate that we've got a core group of five or six guys from the high school in town," Cuthbert said. "We've got some pretty good talent that have come from Moose Jaw, Consul and two guys from Wilkie. It's just getting them to get to know each other on the court."

"Pretty good offensive core," Cuthbert said. "I envision our defence to be a little bit more of a scramble mentality right now, but as long as guys are hitting the floor and throwing their bodies in front of balls we'll get balls up and concentrate on offence once we get the balls up."

The action starts at 6:30pm and 8pm at the Great Plains College gym.
