The Great Plains College SunDogs came up on the wrong end of some close matches in their bid to bring home a provincial title this past weekend from the PAC volleyball championships.

Defending champions, the SunDogs men were eliminated from contention early Saturday after falling in three sets to the Palliser Panthers. Friday the SunDogs lost in three sets to the Woodland Wild. The SunDogs were heavily favoured in both matches after finishing the regular season tied for second, trailing only the Kelsey Amaruks, but ended up settling for close battles in their first losses of the season to both Woodland and Palliser.

The SunDogs women fared a bit better, finishing with a 2-2 record though it wasn’t quite enough for a medal. GPC opened with a straight sets loss to the host Bethany Eagles, a team the SunDogs had handled easily in their previous three meetings this season. The SunDogs came out hard in their next two contests, beating the Eston Storm in straight sets and a tough Millar Edge team in three sets before falling in three sets to Bethany again.

The men’s Edge went on to hand Kelsey their first loss of the season in three sets in the PAC championship match, while the Amaruks women finished the season without a loss, beating Palliser in that final.

Provincials ran Friday and Saturday in Hepburn.
