A bid for Swift Current to potentially host provincial track and field in 2020 has been foiled.

The Chinook School Division was attempting to host the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association (SHSAA) track and field meet for the first time in recent memory, in the largest community in the southwest.

Deb Reamer, the Athletic Coordinator for Chinook School Division, said the facilities and volunteers passed the test but accommodations in the Swift Current area came up short.

"I guess what curtailed our bid was the fact that the SHSAA advises that we have at least 440 rooms minimum and that would be double rooms to accommodate all the athletes, coaches, officials, and fans," she explained. "Unfortunately in the Swift Current area, we could not meet that total."

The committee did some investigating involving the Swift Current Chamber of Commerce to try to figure out how many double rooms in Swift Current hotels could be booked. They came to a conclusion that they would be roughly 100 rooms short of the 440 mark that has been set.

"That's a little difficult in the Swift Current area," Reamer said. "Those satellite towns [around Swift Current] don't have a lot of large chain motels to them, so it really restricts what we can accommodate."

Although Swift Current won't be joining the list of places that often host track (Regina, Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, Prince Albert, and Yorkton), Reamer did note they will circle back to the potential of hosting the largest SHSAA single day event in the future.
