Former Swift Current Broncos captain and WHL/Memorial Cup Champion, Sheldon Kennedy, received another honour on Wednesday to add to the growing list.

Kennedy was announced as the 2019-20 recipient of the WHL Governors Award.

In the release on the award, the league noted that the award criteria is "an individual who, through their outstanding hockey and overall contributions to the game, has impacted on the growth and development of the WHL."

Kennedy was a prolific player for the Broncos from 1986-89, recording 340 combined points (155 G, 185 A) over 190 regular-season, playoff, and Memorial Cup games.

He and the Broncos won the 1989 Memorial Cup, and Kennedy also took part in both the 1988 and 1989 IIHF World Junior Championships - winning in '88 - racking up seven goals and 13 points in 14 games.

Then, after a nine-year professional career split between the NHL, AHL, IHL, and German League, Kennedy turned his focus to the prevention of abuse - not just in the sport.

Kennedy notably roller-bladed across Canada in 1998 in support of sexual abuse victims - an effort that raised $1.2 million.

He then co-founded Respect Group in 2004 - an organization whose focus is the prevention of bullying, abuse, harassment, and discrimination.

Other honours already bestowed on Kennedy include the Hockey Canada Order of Merit, Alberta Order of Excellence, the Order of Canada, and most recently the Order of Hockey in Canada.

The Manitoba product and fan-favourite in southwest Saskatchewan becomes the 21st individual over the last 16 years to receive the WHL Governors Award.
