Special Olympics Swift Current swimmer Katie Durant was at last night's city council meeting to get recognized for her efforts at the Special Olympics Canada 2018 Summer Games.

Durant dominated in the pool in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, racking up a four medals.

She swam her way to a national gold medal in the 200m Breaststroke, and also earned a trio of bronze medals in:

- 100m Breaststroke
- 100m Individual Medley
- 4x50m Relay

Durant said she put in a summer full of hard work prepping for the games.

"This summer I trained twice a week in the pool, and then I did cross-training," Durant said, adding that the set-up for the games was completely different than that of what she had been accustomed to.

"The pool was different, the most different thing there was we couldn't see Jackie."

Jackie Powell, Durant's swimming coach and the head Swimming coach of Special Olympics Swift Current spoke more on the obstacle.

"So the pool that we were at in Antigonish was a relatively small pool - it was a 25 metre pool," said Powell, of the facility, which was half the length of an Olympic-sized pool. "They had room on the deck for some spectators, and then the officials and one coach from every province was allowed to be on the deck. The rest of the athletes and coaches were in a separate area in a different part of the complex, and they were able to watch via video screens."

With Durant's success came, what Swift Current City Councillor and Deputy Mayor Ryan Plewis said was a need to celebrate and showcase her efforts.

"We want to brag about that, because we're proud of your accomplishments," Plewis said. "We're proud to have people from the city and the region here who are not only competing at a high level, but winning at that level. That's something that's worth celebrating."

Up next for Durant is a brief break, before another season in the pool.

"I have some time off, going to start in a couple weeks again," she said. "I'm waiting to see who's selected to go to Worlds in March."

The Special Olympics World Games will be held March 14-21, 2019 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
