After a ten year hiatus, Junior B lacrosse is officially back in Swift Current later this month.

The Swift Current Wolverines will be competing in the six-team Prairie Gold Lacrosse League this season. Swift Current last had a team in the Prairie Gold league from 2003-2009, when they played under the Rampage moniker that the youth teams sport.

Wolverines Manager Roland Tancowny says it feels great to be able to have this level of lacrosse back in the region.

"I wasn't around when Junior lacrosse was around here previously, but I've been here since 2012," he said. "When I first moved here, the association had pretty low numbers and Swift Current lacrosse had pretty low numbers."

"Swift Current lacrosse has kind of built momentum through the years. Now here we are today with a bunch of graduating players from Midget that need a place to play. That's pretty much the strength of our Junior program, and it's exciting to have it started."

Tancowny also added that adding a Junior team to the top of the lacrosse pyramid in Swift Current is a great move to continue the development in the region.

"Very important, and that's the biggest thing. When you've got those youngsters that are in the Rampage program that can look up and see that there's somewhere to go when they're done here," he said. "Eventually, hopefully it starts parlaying into maybe pro opportunities for some of these kids."

The Wolverines' ten-game regular season opens April 27 on the road in Estevan, while the home-opener is set for May 10.

"I'm not quite sure [the players] know what to expect, and we're not really sure what to expect as far as attendance," said Tancowny. "We'd like to see a packed barn, and kind of have the same kind of energy as a Rush game with music and things like that."

The Wolverines' five home games will be played out of Fairview West.
