It's playoff hockey season in the southwest, but starting Friday morning and running over the weekend, skaters of a different kind will be taking to the ice at Fairview arenas in Swift Current.

The annual Jean Norman STARSkate Competition will see some of the best figure skaters in the province competing on both ice surfaces.

"Probably in terms of numbers it's one of the largest, if not the largest, competition that Skate Canada - Saskatchewan holds in this province annually," said Tanya Finlay, an Executive with the Swift Current Skating Club.

Approximately 250 figure skaters over many different age groups and skill levels will be in attendance for the annual event, whose host community rotates around the province.

The three-day event, belonging to Swift Current in 2018, needed some patented southwest volunteerism, and is now set to pay off for not just the Swift Current Skating Club, but also spectators.

"It's taken about 150 volunteers from Swift Current and the surrounding communities to host this event and many sponsors and we'd just like to thank everyone," Finlay noted. "Hopefully people come out and watch, and maybe inspire some new up-and-coming skaters."

The event's full schedule can be seen below. Results will be posted on SwiftCurrentOnline on Monday.
