It was a rough start to the 17U Baseball Canada Cup for three southwest standouts this morning in Regina.

Team Sask, who's playing host to the national competition, was shut out 10-0 by Quebec in the opener.

The contest took just five innings before the mercy rule came into effect.

The French-Canadian squad posted four runs in the first inning, two in the fourth, and four more in the fifth and final frame.

Swift Current's Ethan Murdoch and Brody Alexandre, playing left field and third base respectively, both went 0-for-1 at the plate, reaching base once apiece after they both were hit by a pitch.

Rounding out the trio of southwest representatives is pitcher, and Wymark product, Jackson Fraser. The towering pitcher didn't see game action in the opener.

Murdoch, Fraser, and Alexandre still have a chance at their first win before Day 1 comes to a close.

Coming off an opening performance that saw Team Sask manage just two hits, the host squad is back at it at 7 p.m., taking on Team BC at Optimist Park in the provincial capital.
