With the 2012 Olympic Games getting underway today in London, England, future Olympians are headed to Meadow Lake for the start of the Saskatchewan Summer Games.

Scott Osmachenko is the Chef du Mission for team South West, and says they'll be looking to improve on their fourth place finish from the last games in 2008.

"This is the 40th anniversary of the Saskatchewan Games, team South West or formerly Zone 3 has actually finished second twice.  We're trying to compete somewhere in that, a top three finish is something we'd definitely be happy with," said Osmachenko.

He went on to add that there are several sports where he expects team South West to contend for medals.  "We have some really strong athletics, I think we'll be looking for some medals in there.  We have 31 swimmers this year, we're looking forward to seeing what swimming is going to do, and with the talent of baseball throughout the South West with the strong programs in Moose Jaw and Swift Current."

The world is buzzing in anticipation for the Olympic Games in London, and Osmachenko says having the Saskatchewan Summer Games on at the same time brings added excitement and drive for provincial athletes.  "What we try to tell the athletes is this is kind of their first step, if they want to be an Olympic athlete this is where their dream starts right here in Saskatchewan."

"We'll have the TV's all over the (Olympic) Games, they'll be able to see the opening ceremonies Friday and they'll have their own opening ceremonies on Sunday," added Osmachenko.

Competition at the Saskatchewan Summer Games starts Monday in a variety of sports and will continue until August 4th.  Click here for more on the 2012 Saskatchewan Summer Games.
