Ty Lewis scored in overtime and Logan Thompson made 46 saves as the Brandon Wheat Kings knocked off the Swift Current Broncos 3-2.

It was the third straight game the Broncos have come from behind in the third period to force overtime.

“I thought we played really well,” said Broncos Coach/Director of Player Personnel Manny Viveiros. “Their goaltender tonight was outstanding. He made some really good saves at key times and we put a lot of pucks to the net. We just couldn't get that extra one... I was pretty happy with the effort for our kids last night in Prince Albert and tonight also.”

Tyler Steenbergen and Aleksi Heponiemi each had a goal and an assist on a night when Thompson's play made goals hard to come by.

“Their goalie stood on his head,” Steenbergen said. “He played a fantastic game. We wanted two points, but well take one. We'll move on from it and get ready for Wednesday.”

Steenbergen gave the Broncos an early edge as they were all over the Wheat Kings on two first period power plays. He was able to put one of 10 early shots over Thompson's blocker.

“I just saw a little opening,” Steenbergen said. “I knew (Artyom Minulin) had some good net presence and if I got it off quick enough and high enough it had a good chance to go in.”

Brandon quickly answered back with goals from Baron Thompson and Caiden Daley to take a 2-1 lead after the first period.

Swift Current really asserted themselves in control of the play for the final forty minutes. It still took a third period power play goal from Heponiemi to force overtime.

The top line provided all the scoring again for Swift Current, but the Broncos were very happy with the play of their 2nd, 3rd and 4th lines in generating chances, building momentum and drawing penalties. That was especially important as the Broncos traded away Conner Chaulk, Riley Stotts and Dom Schmiemann earlier in the day and didn't have new additions Matteo Gennaro or Beck Malenstyn in the lineup yet.

“They played awesome,” Steenbergen said. “Obviously we were short a couple of guys with the news coming before the guys and a lot of guys stepped up and played their roles. They were creating a lot of chances for us and that's what caused them to draw a couple penalties. We didn't capitalize on all the penalties, but it was nice to see them playing really well.”

It was exactly what the coaching staff wanted to see from their depth players.

“I was very excited,” Viveiros said. “We've always stressed with these young kids that you have to play the game the right way. If you play the game the right way within our system you're going to get yourself scoring opportunities. It's going to come for some of the kids they've just got to keep doing the right things.”

The Broncos again had some great chances in overtime they couldn't cash on. Swift Current has played well in all their overtime appearances this season despite not yet finding an OT winning goal. They have been to overtime now in four of their last five games and won the previous three in the shootout.

The Broncos expect Gennaro in their lineup on Wednesday against Victoria. Malenstyn won't play for a week or two yet.

With the loss the Broncos fall to 17-5-2-0 on the season and sit three points back of the Moose Jaw Warriors for the Eastern Conference lead with a game in hand. They host Victoria on Wednesday before playing a home-and-home with the Warriors next weekend.
