Indians pitcher Nelson Quark delivers a pitch high and outside at last night's home opener

It appears the near 10-month offseason was plenty of time for the Swift Current Indians' bats to fully charge.

The Tribe came out swinging in last night's season opener at Mitchell Field, as they defeated the Moose Jaw Miller Express 12-3.

Following a 1-2-3 top of the first from Indians' starting pitcher Nelson Quark, the Tribe got on the board in a hurry.

After a Drew Brooks 1-out single, Nate Ackerman promptly unloaded on a 2-1 pitch, sending the ball over the left field wall for a 2-run home run, giving Swift Current a 2-0 lead after 1 inning of play.

Moose Jaw was able to quickly bounce back in the top of the 2nd, scoring 2 runs of their own. However, the Tribe would take the lead back in the bottom half of the inning, cashing 1 run on a Casey Bang RBI single, before blowing the game open in the bottom of the 3rd.

Leading 3-2, the Indians sent 9 players to the plate in the 3rd inning, scoring 5 runs to extend their lead to 8-2. The offensive outburst was highlighted by a pair of RBI singles from local talent Reid Fritzke and Chad Schultz.

The score would remain 8-2 through the middle innings, as both teams pitchers began to dial it in.

In the top of the 7th, Moose Jaw threatened to get back in the game after loading the bases with nobody out, however, following a force out at home, a sacrifice fly and a fly out to centre field, the Miller Express were only able to plate 1 run.

Swift Current then put the game away in the bottom of the 8th. The Tribe scored 4 runs on 3 hits and 3 walks, giving them a 12-3 lead heading into the final frame. Indians' pitcher Aaron Godinez retired the Miller Express in order in the top of the 9th, as Swift Current picked up their first win of the season.

Nelson Quark earned the victory on the mound for the Indians, while Moose Jaw pitcher Brandon Acosta took the loss.

Swift Current and Moose Jaw will play again today at Mitchell Field.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
