A local hockey legend has received one of the highest honours in Canadian sport. Bryan Trottier has been named as one of this year's inductees for Canada's Sports Hall of Fame.

The Val Marie native played two seasons for the original Swift Current Broncos from 1972 to 1974, and stayed with the franchise as it relocated to Lethbridge in 1974. Trottier then went on to an 18-year NHL career, where he helped the New York Islanders to their run of four consecutive Stanley Cups from 1980 to 1983. He also won two more championships with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1991 and 1992, and another as an assistant coach for the Colorado Avalanche in 2001.

Through his NHL career, Trottier scored 525 goals and 1425 points over 1279 regular season games, and is ranked 16th in all-time NHL points. He scored 71 more goals and 184 points in 221 playoff games. Trottier was awarded the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL's leading scorer in 1979, and won the Hart Memorial Trophy as league MVP that same year, as well as the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 1980.

Trottier was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on his first year of eligibility in 1997, and was also part of the inaugural induction classes of the Swift Current Broncos Hall of Fame and Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame, both located at the Credit Union iplex.
