A trio of members of the Diamond Energy Female Midget AAA Wildcats are in Regina this weekend for SaskFirst U18 Team Sask tryouts.

Head coach Terry Pavely is joined by players Taylor Kirwan, and Taylor Lind at the SaskFirst fall camp.

The pair of Taylors is part of the 27-player roster taking on three post-secondary teams as part of the tryouts.

Pavely will be the head coach of Team Sask this year and says exhibition matchups against the University of Regina, University of Manitoba, and Northern Alberta Insitute of Technology help with the coaching staff's evaluation process.

"Part of the reason that we schedule these games against universities is we feel that's the level of play that we're going to be playing against at the national tournament," he said. "We want to see which kids are able to handle that pace and physical nature before we make our final roster."

The Wildcats head coach says the physicality shown by the post-secondary teams will be the biggest adjustment that all 27 players will have to adapt to during the tryout camp.

After the camp, which started last night, and runs until Sunday, Pavely and the coaching staff will be tasked with trimming the roster down to 20 spots for their official Team Sask roster ahead of nationals.

"Obviously as the Wildcats coach, you want them (Taylor Kirwan and Taylor Lind) to make the team, but, on the flipside of that, they know they have to earn their spot," Pavely said. "Regardless of whether they make it or not, you hope the experience makes them better players and that they can take away things they learned from playing with the best players in the province."

The selected players will be heading to the U18 Female National Championships in Quebec City from November 1-5.
