In girls volleyball a silver medal in Humboldt for the U14 Black Swift Current Jr. Sundogs has the team hungry for more.

They only lost twice in seven games in the 10-team tournament. Both losses came to the Battleford Heat - including the final in two straight sets on Sunday, 21-25 and 15-25.

Sundogs coach Chris Grainger wouldn't mind another crack at the Battleford squad.

"The girls are a little bit frustrated that we can't just beat them yet, but hopefully that motivates us for the rest of the year, and hopefully we get another shot at them come provincials," said Grainger.

Only two of five wins on the weekend for the Sundogs needed more than the two-set minimum. Grainger said service and passing the ball were big parts of that success.

"At this age group, that kind of dictates how your game goes - if you're serving the ball and putting pressure on the other team to pass the ball themselves," he said. "We have some girls that can really serve the ball well and put some pressure on the other team, and then conversely when they have a good server come up, we seem to be able to pass the ball well and get some hits off of that. At this level serving and passing are probably your biggest skills that you need to have in order to be successful."

The Sundogs also played Battleford the previous weekend, and came out on the short side. Grainger said that Heat squad is one with height that rolls two lines and does well in all facets of the game.

Provincials are April 21-22, but first up is the Queen City Volleyball Club Tournament in Regina the second weekend of April.

"I think we're a litte bit tired. We had a few kids come under the weather sick on the weekend, so I think just trying to rest up and get healthy, and just try to keep things going. We've improved every tournament that we've entered in, so we're going into Regina looking to win for sure, and just try to keep the girls fresh and keep them hungry," Grainger said.
