It was a banner night for the Swift Current Abbey Resources Midget AA Broncos.

A 3-1 win in Game 3 over the Regina Vics saw Swift Current sweep their South Sask League finals opponent in three-straight contests to hoist the trophy and league banner.

Things started out all Swift Current, as Brock Oberle ripped a wrister over the shoulder of the Vics' netminder 7:25 into the game.

Defenceman and alternate captain Hunter Johnson then crashed the net, burying a rebound for the eventual game-winner with 4:33 left in the first period.

The win didn't come without its tribulations, as the second period momentum belonged to the visiting Vics.

Despite a powerplay goal from Ryland Hornung to make it 3-0 Swift Current, a Vics' goal and 13 shots seemed to add some jump into Regina's game.

"I thought maybe we got focused on the end result in the second and took a step back, but in the third we came out and really pushed hard," noted head coach Todd Hornung.

Cue rookie netminder Justin Dueck.

The product of Waldeck slammed the door shut in the third period, keeping that two-goal lead in tact.

"It's super important, even one goal is a big momentum changer," he said. "Just got to make those big saves and get some help from the team."

Dueck finished with 23 saves on 24 shots for the series-clinching win.

The Midget AA Broncos goalie was swarmed after the final buzzer, as helmets, gloves, and assorted equipment were strewn across the ice in celebration.

"Nothing but excitement right now - we worked all year for this, and it's really good to pay off like this," said Johnson, the game-winning goal scorer.

The win also came in front of a jam-packed Fairview West arena where, despite attendance not being calculated, spare standing room was a laughable thought.

"It was unbelievable, so many people here - the energy was awesome," Dueck said.

"It's been pretty crazy," added rookie forward Cash Arntsen, both regarding the atmosphere, and the experience of extending the team's record this season to 45-0-0-0.

"This is definitely the deepest team I've ever been on. Everybody contributes - if one line is not going, another line steps up every night."

The win caps off by far the most intense, emotional series the Midget AA Broncos have played this post-season.

With the league title on the line, the two teams weren't afraid to mix it up, though Swift Current's bench boss noted his team did a good job of not letting the intensity boil over.

"That's what we talked about at the start of the game - managing emotions, not looking to far head, and not getting excited taking penalties," said Hornung. "Use that energy in a positive way, and I thought we did."

All that remains now for the Midget AA Broncos is a best-of-three provincial final series. The Centre Four league still has to be decided - Battlefords is up 2-0 over the North East, with Game 3 set for Friday.

"We're just going to focus up right away after the game," said Johnson, as the post-game celebrations started to subside on the ice somewhat "Might as well just finish it off strong, then we can have fun after."

"It's going to be a tough series," added Arntsen. "It's the winner in the north, they're going to be a good team - probably one of the best teams we've ever faced, so we've just got to get ready to go."
