New Swift Current Broncos coach Manny Viveiros has done quite a bit of moving around over his long hockey career.

While based in St. Albert, Alberta his career has taken him from Prince Albert to Minnesota and eventually all the way to Austria with several stops in between.

That means it's almost like old hat for he and his wife as they familiarize themselves with a new community and go house hunting.

"My wife and I are really excited about moving here," Viveiros said. "I can't wait to get started."

Viveiros even had a chance to take in a men's night this week and interact with some of the fans.

"We had a wonderful time and met some good people," Viveiros noted. "Swift Current isn't a big city and nor is the hockey world. There's a lot of people that are involved in hockey. It was easy to get out and start talking and meeting new people."

The transition for Swift Current's new Head Coach and Director of Player Personnel starts by spending significant time consulting with outgoing Coach/GM Mark Lamb and current Broncos Director of Hockey Operations Jamie Porter.

"Just trying to get some information on the players and the kids in our system," Viveiros said. "Getting kind of a feel for how they are, style of play and getting a feel for their personality... just getting up to speed with how things work in the Western Hockey League and some of the smaller details.

Viveiros expects to continue connecting with Lamb even well into the season as the former coach has offered himself as a source to his replacement.

Training camp is now only a few weeks away and there isn't much time to prepare for those evaluations.

"It's getting everything ready for when the kids come in," Viveiros said. "Presenting with the system we're going to play, talking with the kids one on one and letting the team know what we expect of the players when they put on a Broncos uniform."

It's also a fresh start for everyone in the organization.

"It's exciting for everybody including the players that they start with a clean slate," Viveiros said. "They have an opportunity to impress the coaching staff and our management group in either making this club or maybe fighting for a position they weren't placed in last season. Everyone starts with a clean slate and our kids will be selected on merit."

Swift Current's new coach will be keeping an eye on the team's depth as he is hoping to be able to play a four line game as much as possible.

"You want to run four lines as long as possible throughout the game," Viveiros said. "Obviously there are times you have to cut your bench down. With teams that are successful with such a long team and travel if you can get the most out of your whole roster throughout the season you have an opportunity at the most important time of the season in the playoffs to be fresh. For me also it's an opportunity for us to develop these young kids. If we're going to have younger kids pushing for positions on our hockey team this year they need to play."

Viveiros started his career as a star for the Memorial Cup winning Prince Albert Raiders in the 80s. Now that he's on the other side of the rivalry is he ready to hear some boos from Raiders fans?

"No!" he exclaimed maybe a little bit tongue in cheek. "No. Prince Albert is such a special place for us. It's where I met my wife and my in laws are from there. If they're going to boo us because we may win a game there that's fine, but they're certainly not going to boo us from anything I'm going to do or my team is going to do on the ice.  I don't expect that to happen. But if it does I certainly understand it's part of the sport."

"I don't expect that from Prince Albert."

He won't have to wait long to find out as the Broncos make a trip there for their third game of the regular season on September 30th.

The ice is now in place at the Credit Union iPlex and training camp is only a few weeks away. It won't be long before Swift Current fans get their first taste of a Manny Viveiros coached team.

The hard work starts now.
