The Waldeck Warriors senior boys volleyball team are now underway on a busy season.

They captured a bronze medal at the Crescent Heights tournament in Medicine Hat this past weekend, taking on some of the best grade nine teams in southwest Saskatchewan and southern Alberta.

"It's quite a high-flying tournament, and the kids did very well," said coach Harv Martinez. "We ended up 9-and-4, wound up playing Fox Valley in the bronze medal game and had an exciting three-set match. We ended up winning in the end, and we were really excited about the weekend."

Martinez says getting to play in these tournaments helps to develop these young athletes, adding the senior boys team could see up to 85 sets between tournament and league play this season.

"I give the kids a lot of credit and their families as well for the commitment they have for making this program run," he added. "Without everybody putting it all in there, things like this don't fly. It takes a lot of people to make this thing go and we're thankful for that."

The Warriors Senior Boys team will return to the Gas City for the Notre Dame Academy Tournament in mid-October. In the meantime, they will play in a five-team tournament in Cabri this weekend while the girls will travel to Moose Jaw for another tournament.
