Indians Weyburn 2

The Weyburn Beavers gave themselves some signs of hope as they beat the Swift Current Indians 4-3 at Mitchell Field last night.

The two teams will start their first round WMBL playoff series on Wednesday in Swift Current. The win was the first for Weyburn in the four games between the two teams.

Interview with Phil Curtis"It build a little bit of confidence," said Beavers Coach Phil Curtis. "It shows that we can beat them. I think all the guys have a little more belief that we can beat them because we have done it."

The Indians weren't putting to much stock in the implications of the loss.

"You can have confidence whatever but it's all about once the game start it's even playing field anyway," said Indians Coach Joe Carnahan. "Whatever the records are in the regular season it's now even playing field every game."

The Indians had top spot in the eastern playoff bracket locked up and rested some of their starters. That didn't mean they weren't trying to compete.

Joe Carnahan Interview"It's an opportunity to play a game here to be able to play baseball," Carnahan. "By no means are we not trying to get a win. Everybody we had in they've been playing all year. Today we just didn't cash in on some opportunities."

Reiley Grose made the start after spending most of the summer battling injury or pitching in the bullpen. He went 6 innings allowing only 1 earned run off 5 hits and 5 walks while striking out 4.

"Grose did an outstanding job," Carnahan said. "He gave us 6 strong innings and he did everything we wanted plus some extra. You have to tip your hat to him he did a great job."

It was the final home game of the WMBL regular season schedule for the Indians and they drew a large crowd of 628 fans to Mitchell Field.

Bryant Munoz led the way offensively for Swift Current as he went 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI.

They'll wrap up their regular season in Medicine Hat on Tuesday night. Noah Gapp gets the start for the Indians.

"He's pitched a lot of relief appearances this year and he's been doing a good job for us," Carnahan said. "He's got a promising future and it'll be good to get him a start here."

Gapp has a 2.81 earned run average in 9 relief appearances this summer. He gets the opportunity to start as the Indians rest their main rotation for the start of the playoffs on Wednesday.

The Indians host Weyburn for games 1 and 2 on Wednesday and Thursday. The series would then shift to Weyburn on Friday night and Saturday afternoon. If game 5 is necessary it be in Swift Current on Sunday.
