NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs

Two players with local ties found the scoresheet in NHL playoff action Friday night.

Former Swift Current Bronco Ian White opened the scoring for the Red Wings as Detroit beat Nashville 3-2. The series is tied up at a game apiece as it moves to Detroit.

Shaunavon's Braydon Coburn picked up an assist for the Flyers as Philadelphia beat Pittsburgh 8-5. Coburn's shot late in the second period was redirected by Flyer forward Sean Couturier for his first of three goals in the game. Claude Giroux also had a hat trick for the Flyers, who take a 2-0 series lead on the Penguins back to the City of Brotherly Love.

Dustin Brown had two short-handed goals as the Los Angeles Kings beat the top-seeded Vancouver Canucks 4-2. The Kings take a 2-0 series lead over the Presidents' Trophy winners back to Southern California.

Martin Brodeur got his 100th career NHL playoff win as the Devils opened their series against Florida with a 3-2 win over the Panthers.

Four NHL playoff games are on tap today. Maple Creek's Zack Smith and the Ottawa Senators look to tie up their series with the New York Rangers when they play game two tonight at Madison Square Garden, while Aneroid's Patrick Marleau and the San Jose Sharks visit St. Louis after beating the Blues in double-overtime on Thursday night. The two other games have Boston hosting Washington with the Bruins up 1-0 in the series, and Phoenix entertains Chicago looking to go up 2-0 on the Blackhawks.

In the WHL playoffs, Dominic Uher got the overtime winner for the Spokane Chiefs, as they beat Tri-City 3-2 to tie their series up at two games apiece. Game five is tonight in Kennewick, Washington. The Portland Winterhawks and Kamloops Blazers play game five of their series in Portland tonight, with the Winterhawks up 3-1.

In Junior A, the Humboldt Broncos are Canalta Cup champions. They claimed their fourth SJHL league title in just six seasons with a 6-0 win over the Weyburn Red Wings in game six of the series at Weyburn's Crescent Point Place.

The Broncos are already hosting the RBC Cup National Championship, and will take on the MJHL champion Portage Terriers in the ANAVET Cup ahead of that tournament.
