It's a big day for the Swift Current Broncos, as the WHL Bantam Draft takes place today in Red Deer.

The Broncos don't have a pick until the third round, when they select 54th overall, after acquiring a third from the Seattle Thunderbirds.

Swift Current's next pick, which they acquired from the Kootaney ICE, comes in the sixth round at 114 overall. After that they have a pick in every round through the rest of the 14 rounds in the draft, including two in both the ninth and 10th rounds.

The lack of high picks doesn't mean the Broncos will be chasing higher risk picks later to fill the talent gap.

"You could take the player that you know is going to play but he's just going to play," said Broncos Director of Hockey Operations Jamie Porter. "You know he'll play in the league somehow and you might want to have some bodies. I think we'll do a little bit of both. We're not going to change our philosophy a ton. We're not going to take enormous swings at some guys. We need to make sure we've got some guys that follow our system... and see if we can just be patient with them."

Last year the Broncos took Defenceman Joel Sexsmith ninth overall and forward Ben King at 13.

Sexsmith was one of a number of pieces or picks the Broncos moved during the season to stock up for their playoff run.

Once the Broncos made those deals including youth and future draft picks they put some effort into filling some of that future talent in other ways.

"We had to go back out after the trade deadline and evaluate all of our own prospects and see what we have in house," Porter said. "Then we went out and acquired some free agents. The scouting staff did an excellent job of going out and looking at guys to see if there had been any progression over a couple years."

While draft day focuses on the future, Broncos fans are decidedly focused on the present this week as team makes their first appearance in the WHL Championship Final in 25 years.

Game 1 of the league final is Friday night in Swift Current against the Everett Silvertips.
