After initially in June setting a return-to-play date tentatively for October 2, 2020, the Western Hockey League announced yesterday through a press release that it would be delaying that a further two months and, instead returning on December 4.

The move was announced after a meeting was held on Wednesday; the same day that its CHL sister league, the Ontario Hockey League, announced a December 1, 2020 return-to-play play.

Of the three leagues that comprise the CHL, two have now set new December start dates, with only the Quebec Major Juniors still holding on to an October 1, 2020 start date.

representatives for the WHL have said that the delay is necessary in order to address key issues that remain, such as spectator capacity and border crossings.

Ron Robinson, the WHL Commissioner has also come out and stated their intent to play a full regular season and playoff schedule despite the late start.
