A local hockey icon is confident her sport is getting stronger. Shaunavon's Hayley Wickenheiser helped lead Canada to a gold medal at the recent World Women's Hockey Championship.

She was also happy to see some tougher competition from Europe, “You know Finland they're fitter and faster then they've been, they've got a very good goaltender. We saw the Swiss dominate the Fins as well, beat them 6-2 in the bronze metal game they also have one of the top goalies in the NCAA.”

Wickenheiser was disappointed by the play of the Russian team, but is hopeful it will serve as a turning point for their federation.

Women's hockey has to get more competitive as the IOC said after the 2010 Olympics that more countries needed to be in the mix for it to survive long-term as an Olympic sport.

Wickenheiser wants to be part of the solution, “My attitude about it is, let's tell everyone what were doing and share secrets how to grow the game. What we've done, in making them better you're only going to challenge yourself to be better to.”
