The Diamond Energy Female Midget AAA Wildcats were at Fairview West for a pair of home games against the Melville Prairie Fire over the weekend.

In night one, the Wildcats were decked out in pink uniforms in support of breast cancer research, as well as those affected by the disease.

Along with wearing pink, the Wildcats were wearing out the mesh of the opposing goal in the game as well - especially the first period.

Swift Current capitalized on early penalty trouble for Melville, scoring three unanswered power play goals in 65 seconds.

With 7:37 to go in the first Brooklyn Colborn got a feed from Taylor Lind and Carissa Hogan to open the scoring.

Then just six seconds later, Layne Hryhoriw took a pass from Kenedee Klevgaard and buried another puck in the Melville net - perhaps not seen by many, as anyone who blinked after the faceoff surely missed it.

The third goal came with 6:32 to go courtesy of Ryleigh White with assists from Trista Labarowski and Toni Theaker.

The first even-strength goal of the period came in the final few minutes of the period as the Lind sisters connected, with Tenelle finding her younger sister Taylor, who found the back of the net.

Swift outshot Melville 18-2 in the period, and that would prove to be all the scoring the Wildcats needed, as a second-period Melville goal on the man-advantage was answered by a third-period point from Taylor Lind with another assist coming from Hogan as the Wildcats took the game 5-1.

Wildcats rookie goaltender Amaya Giraudier stopped 16 of 17 shots (13 of those coming in the second period), and head coach Terry Pavely says she performed well despite long stretched without any action.

"She was pretty good, I thought she made the saves she needed to make," he said. "Their power play goal was a really nice deflection that she just didn't have a chance on. She made a couple of saves when we needed them and that's all you can ask for from your goaltender."

However, Pavely says he didn't feel the scoreboard reflected his team's performance in the game.

"Overall, we were happy with the result but very disappointed with the way we played," he said. "I thought that they were the better team - they out-skated us. At the end of the day we won and that's a positive, but we've got to find a way to be better."

Swift Current ended the day 3-of-10 on the power play, while out-shooting Melville 26-17.

Wildcats forward Taylor Lind in Sunday's game against the Melville Prairie Fire. Lind had a goal and two assists on the night, to total six points on the weekend.

Sunday afternoon's contest was a bit of a role reversal on the score sheet.

After a Taylor Lind goal on the man advantage opened the scoring for Swift Current, Melville scored twice to end the first period.

The second proved no different for the Wildcats, with Melville adding three more goals. Swift managed a second-period goal from Sara Kendall to hold the lead at 5-2.

"We kind of hoped we would have learned our lesson Saturday night, but today for 40 minutes we were absolutely dominated," said Pavely. "When we decided to play hard, we had a pretty good third period."

The Wildcats used goals in the final period from the Kirwan sisters as Baylee scored three minutes in, while team captain Taylor added Swift Current's fourth goal with 6:30 left.

That would be as close as the Wildcats would get though, dropping the Sunday showdown 5-4. Goaltender Harper Davey stopped 20 of 25 shots in the loss.

For the second time this weekend, Pavely says they couldn't find a high enough gear on the ice.

"If you pressure teams, they make turnovers and you get opportunities - Melville did that for two periods tonight," said the Wildcats head coach. "That's the bottom line - we have to compete and we have to make plays. We felt that, for the most part this weekend, those were two phases that we weren't very good at."

Taylor Lind had three goals and three assists as the leading Wildcats' player on the stat sheet for the weekend.

The Wildcats now sit at 4-4-0-1 on the season and are off until a November 8 road game in Wilcox against the Notre Dame Hounds.
