With two defensemen and four forwards already either signed or verbally committed to play post-secondary hockey upon graduation, it was a matter of time before a Diamond Energy Female Midget AAA Wildcats' goaltender joined the trend.

That's exactly what happened this week, as grade 12 netminder Cheyenne Jamieson signed to play for the Olds College Broncos' women's hockey program for the 2020-21 season.

The Moosomin product said playing post-secondary sports has been a goal for a while, though the exact sport wasn't clear until recently.

"It's been a lifelong dream of mine - I've always wanted to continue on," she said. "It was a hard decision between hockey and softball, but I wanted to pursue hockey."

Jamieson's pursuit of logging time in the crease competitively after high school takes her to an Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) program that pairs well with her career aspirations.

"I really want to do Agriculture in university," said Jamieson, who's set to study Agricultural Management. "Olds has always been a really good Agriculture program school - it just really stood out to me and the programs that they offer."

Along with the perfect fit for her scholastic endeavours, Jamieson said Broncos head coach Chris Leeming's effort to make her feel at home at Olds as a recruit went a long way.

"Once we did start talking, I asked if I could come for a tour - he was really good, walked me through everything," she said. "He had two girls come out on the tour with us, and they were very sociable, and they answered all the questions that we had."

Jamieson is in the midst of a career year with the Wildcats - her first, and last - after spending the first two seasons of her SFMAAAHL career with the now-defunct Melville Prairie Fire.

She owns a 7-3 record, a 1.97 goals-against-average, and a .922 save-percentage. Those marks top her previous bests of a 2.87 GAA and .913 save-% last season with Melville.

"I think coming into this season, I knew that I'd have a stronger team in front of me and it would really help," she said.

However, she noted some of the discernible success this season can simply be chalked up to splitting starts with fellow goalie Amaya Giraudier, as opposed to playing in 25 of 28 games with the Prairie Fire.

"I think my game has definitely improved. Having two goalies out there really keeps me competing against (Amaya)."

Jamieson will be joining an Olds College team that is currently in fourth place (4-14-3) in the five-team ACAC standings.

"I always compete and I always try my hardest. I think I'm going to be a good asset, just because I know that I'll help the team win or I'll keep them in the games as far as I can go."

Jamieson looks to have five more regular-season starts remaining, should the Wildcats continue the trend of alternating starts.

She and the Wildcats have amassed a 16-4-1-0 record, good for second place in the SFMAAAHL, with nine games to go in the now-30-game season.

It's a relatively tough stretch to close, as Swift Current takes on the Regina Rebels in three of their remaining games - all coming on the road.

"I think we need to keep working on our details and keep working hard in practices and games," Jamieson said. "Always striving to do our best, and I think we need to start competing against the higher teams at a higher level. I think we kind of backed off a little bit in the second half, but I know if we keep working hard we can get there."

After losing three of four to open 2020, the Wildcats are now winners of five-straight games.

Jamieson gets the start Saturday night in Game 1 of a two-game weekend home set against the Battlefords Sharks. Game 1 goes 7:45 p.m. at Fairview West, with the finale a 1:15 start on Sunday.
