The Diamond Energy Female Midget 'AAA' Wildcats and Saskatoon Stars began their best of five league final series last night in Saskatoon.

The Wildcats stormed out to a 4-1 lead after two periods of play and then managed to hand on in the third, opening the series with a 4-3 win.

Brooklyn Colborn and Kayla Kirwan got everything started for Swift Current in the opening frame.

Just over six minutes into the game, Colborn found the back of the net to open the scoring, before Kirwan extended the lead to two with just three second remaining.

In the second period Kaci Jones continued to build the lead for Swift Current as the Wildcats jumped out in front 3-0.

However, not even a minute after Jones' goal, the Stars came back with their first goal of the game cutting the lead to 3-1.

The Wildcats were able to get the lead back up to three before the end of the frame though, as semi-final game fiver overtime hero Josee Casavant scored.

In the third, the Stars did everything they could to fight back.

Saskatoon got a pair of goal, trimming the lead down to just one with 7:04 left in the period.

That was as close as teh Stars would get though as the Wildcats held on for a 4-3 win and a 1-0 series lead.

The league final will shift to Swift Current Wednesday night for game two.
