A great start for the Swift Current Midget AAA Diamond Energy Wildcats at the Mac's Tournament in Calgary.

"It was a pretty good effort by our team," said Wildcats Coach Terry Pavely. "We talked a lot about getting pucks deep and establishing a forecheck and getting our cycle game going. I thought we did an excellent job of that in the first period."

Brooklyn Haubrich scored twice and had an assist leading the Wildcats to a 4-0 win over the Winnipeg Ice on Friday afternoon.

"She sets the tone for our hockey team," Pavely said. "We want to get to the net. Even though she's not the biggest player she always finds a way to get to the net and create havok around the net... you get that kid who sets the tone for you and other kids follow."

Kate Scidmore and Merissa Zerr also scored for Swift Current. Jasey Book earned the shutout.

"We are good defensively the struggle we have is getting that third goal," Pavely said. "Today we found a way we do it. Let's try to step on the gas pedal when we have a lead and I thought we did that today."

"The one area we probably need to improve on our neutral ice game wasn't very good. That allowed them to get a transition."

There's a quick turnaround for the Wildcats as they take on the Edmonton Thunder at 8am on Saturday.

"We're not used to playing early morning games in our league," Pavely noted. "All the reports we have is that they're one of the top teams in Western Canada and they've got a couple of kids who can really finish... we just can't give them a lot of high quality scoring chances."

The Wildcats are two-time former Mac's champions. The tournament features some of the best boys and girls midget AAA teams from across North America.
