The Diamond Energy Female Midget Wildcats took game one of their first round playoff series with a 3-2 victory over the Regina Rebels at home Thursday night.

Taylor Kirwan scored the winning goal for the Wildcats on the power play with 7:10 left in the third period, as the Wildcats overcame a 2-1 deficit after 20 minutes.

"We got better as the game went on," said Wildcats coach Terry Pavely. "In the first period, we made two mistakes and they ended up in the back of our net, but from that point on, we really played really good team defence. We limited them to nine shots in the last two periods, and I felt we really took over the game, and played pretty well down the stretch.

"Even though we were down, we didn't get down" he added. "They didn't get discouraged and they stuck to the plan and the way we felt we had to play, and ended up with a power play goal late in the third period to win the hockey game."

Alex Gray and Kaci Jones also scored for Swift Current and Chloe Smith added two assists. Jasey Book made 17 saves for the victory.

Game two of the best-of-five series goes Sunday afternoon in Regina, and game three will be back in Swift Current on Tuesday.
